With the launch of the Vilhelmina Model Forest in Sweden in 2004, several countries in Europe turned their attention to the Model Forest approach as an innovative way to think about issues such as participatory processes, landscape-level approaches, biodiversity and economic health of resource dependent communities.

New and encouraging activity is also being registered in Model Forests in Russia and Sweden, and with other neighbouring countries, to explore the potential of Model Forests to address sustainability issues in the boreal and temperate forest landscapes of the Baltic region.
